CEWIL CANADA HONOURS EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS WITH 2024 EMERY-DUFAULT STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARDS

 Toronto, ON, March 12, 2025 – CEWIL Canada is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2024 Emery-Dufault Student of the Year Awards, celebrating exceptional students who have demonstrated innovation, leadership, and impact through work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences. These awards recognize students from universities, colleges, polytechnics, and CEGEPs across Canada who have made significant contributions to their workplaces and communities. "This year’s award recipients exemplify the transformative power of WIL," said Colleen Philips-Davis and Julie Witt, Co-Chairs of the Emery-Dufault Student of the Year Awards Committee. "Their achievements showcase the value of experiential learning in shaping future leaders who drive change in their fields and beyond."

2024 CEWIL Canada Emery-Dufault Student of the Year Award Winners

University WIL Category – Phoenix Seelochan, University of Toronto Phoenix, a fourth-year student in Economics and Political Science, has been recognized for her leadership in international relations and climate advocacy. Through her internship with the NATO Association of Canada, she contributed critical analyses on climate change and global security, influencing high-level policy discussions. Her work at the 4th Global Peace Summit at the UN Conference Centre in Thailand further cemented her impact in global peacebuilding. Read more about Phoenix’s journey.

University Co-op Category – Yui Mikuriya, University of British Columbia Yui, a Computer Science and Business student, has excelled in global WIL initiatives and entrepreneurship. During her co-op journey, she worked with companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Adobe, leading initiatives that expanded tech access in rural Japan and generated multimillion-dollar impacts. As a co-founder of Y&Y Journey, she has already helped over 100 students gain WIL opportunities in Japan’s tech sector. Find out more about Yui’s achievements.

College & CEGEP WIL Category – Quinlin Lawrynowicz, Sheridan College Quinlin, a student of Creative Writing and Publishing, made a profound impact through their role at Inflamed Brain Alliance (IBA). They launched the Healing Stories Creative Writing Program, offering a platform for individuals to process trauma through storytelling. Their digital content creation efforts have significantly increased awareness and engagement for the organization. Learn more about Quinlin’s contributions.
College & CEGEP Co-op Category – Eidah Jauforally, Sheridan College Eidah, a graduate of the Business Administration – Accounting Co-op program, distinguished herself through her role at PwC, contributing to audit engagements and financial analysis. She also played a key role in PwC’s Muslim Inclusive Network, organizing events to promote cultural awareness and inclusion. Discover Eidah’s story.

Applications for the 2025 Emery-Dufault Student of the Year Award will open in November 2025. Institutions are encouraged to nominate students who are shaping the future of work through experiential learning.

About the CEWIL Canada and Emery-Dufault Student of the Year Awards 

Each year CEWIL Canada recognizes the outstanding achievements of co-operative education (co-op) and work-integrated learning students from both colleges and universities. Co-op and work-integrated learning offices across Canada will be celebrating these students’ successes and other related initiatives during National Co-op & WIL Month in March. 

All winners of the CEWIL Canada and Emery-Dufault Student of the Year Awards receive a certificate to commemorate their achievements. The awards were expanded in 2018 to include a category for all forms of WIL that occur beyond traditional co-op programs. The prize includes a $1,500 cash award (a CEWIL Canada Award of $1,000 and the Emery-Dufault Award of $500). 

The Emery-Dufault Award was established in 2003 to be given to the winners of the former Co-op Student of the Year Award in recognition of the contributions of two of the founding fathers of co-operative education in Canada, Dr. Charles Leslie (Les) Emery and Professor George Joseph Dufault. Les Emery first introduced the idea of co-operative education to Waterloo College Associate Faculties, the forerunner of the University of Waterloo. His proposal and subsequent work led to the establishment of the first co-operative education program in Canada. George Dufault set up and headed the Department of Co-ordination during its first year (from 1957 to 1958) at Waterloo College Associate Faculties. This was the precursor to the current Co-operative & Experiential Education Office at the University of Waterloo.

Catégorie Université AIT – Phoenix Seelochan, Université de Toronto
Phoenix, étudiante en quatrième année en Économie et Science politique, a été reconnue pour son leadership dans les relations internationales et la défense du climat. Grâce à son stage auprès de l'Association de l'OTAN du Canada, elle a contribué à des analyses cruciales sur le changement climatique et la sécurité mondiale, influençant les discussions politiques de haut niveau. Son travail au 4e Sommet mondial pour la paix au Centre de conférences des Nations Unies en Thaïlande a consolidé son impact dans la construction de la paix à l'échelle mondiale. Catégorie Université Co-op – Yui Mikuriya, University of British Columbia
Yui, étudiante en Informatique et en Affaires, a excellé dans des initiatives mondiales d'AIT et d'entrepreneuriat. Lors de son parcours co-op, elle a collaboré avec des entreprises telles qu'Apple, Microsoft et Adobe, menant des initiatives ayant étendu l'accès à la technologie dans les zones rurales du Japon et généré des impacts multimillionnaires. En tant que cofondatrice de Y&Y Journey, elle a déjà permis à plus de 100 personnes étudiantes d'accéder à des opportunités AIT dans le secteur technologique japonais. Catégorie AIT Collège & CEGEP – Quinlin Lawrynowicz, Sheridan College
Quinlin a eu un impact profond grâce à son rôle au sein de l'Inflamed Brain Alliance (IBA). Quinlin a lancé le programme Healing Stories Creative Writing, offrant une plateforme pour que les personnes traitent des traumatismes à travers l'écriture. Eidah, diplômée du programme Coop en Administration des Affaires – Comptabilité, s'est distinguée par son rôle chez PwC, contribuant à des missions d'audit et des analyses financières. Elle a aussi joué un rôle clé dans le Réseau Inclusif Musulman de PwC, organisant des événements pour promouvoir la sensibilisation culturelle et l'inclusion. Découvrez l'histoire d'Eidah.

Les candidatures pour le Prix ECAIT Canada et Emery-Dufault de la personne étudiante de l'Année 2025 ouvriront en novembre 2025. Les établissements sont invités à nommer des personnes étudiantes qui façonnent l'avenir du travail grâce à l'apprentissage expérientiel.

À propos des Prix ECAIT Canada et Emery-Dufault de la personne étudiante de l'Année

Chaque année, ECAIT Canada reconnaît les réalisations exceptionnelles des personnes étudiantes en éducation coopérative (coop) et en apprentissage intégré au travail des collèges et universités. Les bureaux de coop/apprentissage intégré au travail à travers le Canada célèbrent ces réussites et d'autres initiatives connexes pendant le Mois National de l' Enseignement Coopérative et de l'AIT en mars. Tous les lauréats du prix ECAIT Canada et Emery-Dufault de la personne étudiante de l'Anné reçoivent un certificat pour commémorer leurs réalisations. En 2018, les prix ont été étendus en pour inclure une catégorie pour toutes les formes d'AIT qui ne font pas parties des programmes coop traditionnels. Le prix inclut une récompense monétaire de 1 500 $ (un prix ECAIT Canada de 1 000 $ et le Prix Emery-Dufault de 500 $).
Le Prix Emery-Dufault a été créé en 2003 pour être décerné aux gagnant·e·s de l'ancien Prix des Personnes Étudiante de l'Année en Coop en reconnaissance des contributions de deux des pères fondateurs de l'éducation coopérative au Canada, le Dr Charles Leslie (Les) Emery et le Professeur George Joseph Dufault. Les Emery a été le premier à introduire l'idée de l'éducation coopérative au Waterloo College Associate Faculties, l'ancêtre de l'Université de Waterloo. 
Sa proposition et son travail subséquent ont conduit à la création du premier programme d'éducation coopérative au Canada. George Dufault a mis en place et dirigé le Département de la Coordination durant sa première année (de 1957 à 1958) au Waterloo College Associate Faculties. C'était le précurseur du programme actuel de Coopérative et Éducation Expérientielle à l'Université de Waterloo.
