Foundational Course for WIL Practitioner Certification

Module #1 - Foundations of Work-Integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning is more than connecting students with opportunities. It requires intentional design, strong relationships, ethical practice, and a commitment to quality outcomes for students, partners, and institutions.  

Foundations of Work-Integrated Learning is the first course in CEWIL Canada's Certified WIL Practitioner Program and explores the foundational concepts, frameworks, and practices that underpin high-quality WIL experiences across Canada. 

Participants will join a national community of WIL practitioners to explore how foundational concepts are applied in practice, learn from colleagues working in a variety of contexts, and reflect on their own approaches to supporting students and partners.

Topics Include

  • Work-Integrated Learning: What, How, and Why;
  • Defining the Role of the WIL Practitioner
  • The Nine Types of Work-Integrated Learning 
  • The AAA* Work-Integrated Learning Quality Framework 
  • Ethical Considerations in WIL 
  • Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Access (EDIA) in Work-Integrated Learning 
  • Creating Meaningful Learning Experiences for Students and Partners

Course Format

  • Primarily self-paced online learning through Moodle 
  • Facilitated discussions and peer engagement 
  • Reflective learning activities 
  • Live virtual learning sessions 
  • Approximately 30–40 hours over the duration of the course

Assessment - Participants demonstrate their learning through a combination of: 

  • Knowledge checks and quizzes 
  • Reflective practice activities 
  • Discussion forum participation 
  • Engagement in virtual live workshops

Course Dates: September 15, 2026 – January 15, 2027 

Please note: Participants may request a one-time deferral for a $75 fee, provided the request is submitted at least 30 days before the course end date. A full refund is available up to the end of the first week of the course; after that time, registrations may be deferred once or transferred to another individual. Exceptions may be considered for medical emergencies or other unforeseen circumstances with supporting documentation.
