Sustainable partnerships have many beginnings, but no endings. Join members of the Community Service-Learning team from the University of Alberta to learn more about their model of experiential learning and their approach to building meaningful partnerships with the community. After a brief introduction to the history and context for CSL at UAlberta, CSL’s Partnership Coordinators will share insights into the work of partnership development, and engage attendees in discussion and idea-sharing. There will be time for questions at the end of the workshop.

Facilitators  

Erin Kelly has worked as a Partnership Coordinator with Community Service-Learning at the University of Alberta since 2012, and as the Senior Partnership Coordinator since 2019.  She came to CSL after 10 years in the non-profit sector, and 2 years coordinating international service-learning opportunities for Canadian youth in Nicaragua. Erin credits much of her interest in community development to her early experiences of engagement in community, and she is passionate about the potential for transformative learning through experiential learning.

Mishma Mukith is a former CSL student-turned-Partnership Coordinator, and has been in this role since 2019. She is a firm believer in experiential learning, and is passionate about bringing community knowledge into academic spaces. Mishma is a writer and storyteller, often experimenting with different mediums to amplify community voices. She is the co-founder of “Converse and Cook,” a local non-profit organization that aims to bring people together through cooking meals and dining together.

Jay Friesen has worked with CSL in various roles since 2015 and has been a Partnership Coordinator since 2019. He has always been motivated by meeting new people, collaborating with communities, and following his curiosity; CSL has been the perfect mixture of all three. Most often, you can find Jay in spaces where he can learn with others, which presently includes teaching Introduction to Community Engagement (CSL 100) and collaborating with The Learning Centre on Edmonton’s ongoing adult literacy needs assessment.

Dr. David Peacock is Director of Community Service-Learning at UALberta.  His research interests are in community-university engagement policy and practice, and ‘first generation’ university student participation in experiential learning. He teaches a course in the CSL Certificate called ‘An Introduction to Community BAsed Research’.
