Cooperative Education Coordinator

Summary

The Career & Experiential Learning (CEL) department in a centralized unit, that is comprised of faculty and staff, within the Faculty of Student Development (FSD) at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. The CEL department operates under a Chairperson that reports to the Dean of the Faculty.  At this time, the Career & Experiential Learning department invites candidates to apply to the Tenure Track Faculty Co-op Coordinator position.

Under the direction of the TRU Career & Experiential Learning department, the Co-op Coordinator will work collaboratively as part of the CEL team to support Co-op students in their career education, career planning, and career development activities. The Coordinator will work with alumni and prospective employers who are seeking to recruit Co-op students from TRU Sciences, Arts and Tourism programs.

 

Duties

The Co-op Coordinator will perform a variety of duties and functions that support the career development of TRU Co-op students. A thorough understanding of career theory will allow the successful candidate to develop career action plans, disseminate labour market information, identify core career competencies, complete a career portfolio, develop application documents, implement interview strategies, and assist students to make meaning of their education during the transition from academics to experiential and work integrated learning opportunities. 

The Co-op Coordinator will:

  1. Instruct semester sections of the pre-requisite Career Management Co-op 1000 course throughout the year
  2. Develop, evaluate and mark Co-op 1000 assignments and capstone projects
  3. Develop career based curriculum
  4. Secure, coordinate, and monitor placements of co-op students with participating organizations, corporations and agencies at a regional, provincial, and national level
  5. Utilize the Moodle LMS platform to develop the work-term course, assignments, and communications for students in a Co-op work-term
  6. Conduct mid-term site visits and evaluations for students and employers
  7. Be responsible for promoting the Co-op program to students and prospective employers
  8. Market Co-op opportunities to prospective students and participate in a variety of recruitment events, career fairs, and employer information sessions
  9. Meet with students one-on-one to assist them in the co-op process. This will include advising students on career development, planning, Co-op guidelines, and eligibility requirements.
  10. Develop employer partnerships and Co-op work-term opportunities for students
  11. Maintain student records and documentation
  12. Engage in community and employer recruitment activities to develop employment opportunities for students with organizations, corporations and agencies
  13. Maintain accurate records and entering confidential information on the Customer Relationship Management system
  14. Maintain stats and generating reports for the Chairperson
  15. Perform other duties as required

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree relevant to Career Education, Co-operative Education, Experiential Learning, and/or Work Integrated Learning disciplines
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working in the Co-operative Education, Work Integrated Learning and/or Experiential Learning field
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in career advising, employment preparation, and supporting students through the career planning and career decision making process
  • Must have a strong work placement and monitoring experience
  • Demonstrated instructional skills and experience in a post-secondary setting
  • Must have strong attachment to business and industry, with excellent knowledge of regional, provincial, national and international labour markets/trends
  • Must have strong marketing and presentation skills to communicate with various stakeholder groups
  • Excellent knowledge of the recruitment and talent acquisition process
  • Superior time management, written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with diverse populations, including students, employers, faculty, deans, administrators and alumni
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team that works in a centralized work environment
  • Must have a proven track record in meeting deadlines and follow through on tasks
  • Must have a high degree of professionalism and be able to work effectively in a team
  • Proficiency in MS Office software, database programs, Banner and Learning Management Systems like Moodle is an asset
  • Valid Driver's License
