CEWIL Resource Hub: Field Placement at Brock University

As part of their field placement, students learn how to write cover letters and résumés, network with potential employers, and succeed in interviews. Students are encouraged to use the field placement as preparation for a subsequent sport management internship, which is more intensive and involves using these career skills to secure a position with an employer/partner.

Key success factors

  • The field placement is easily accessible for students because it’s situated right on campus. It’s also flexible in terms of duration.
  • The placement builds on professional development and career readiness concepts students have been introduced to as early as first year.

Unique characteristics

  • Students have the opportunity to contribute to their campus community while gaining meaningful experience.
  • Occurring in the third year of study, the field placement helps to prepare students for the fourth year internship.

Challenges

  • A challenge that hasn’t been experienced yet but could pose a problem in the future is increased enrolment. There are only so many potential placements within a Brock context, and a higher number of students could strain the number of placements currently available.
