Our CEWIL WIL Practitioner training modules are open for registration for Winter 2024.  All three courses will begin on January 31st with an expected end date of April 30th, 2024.

The process to become a CEWIL certified WIL Practitioner requires completion of the CEWIL WIL Practitioner training modules, and an application to be a CEWIL certified WIL practitioner.

Step 1: Completion of CEWIL Canada’s WIL Practitioner Training modules

This asynchronous training program is a foundational program for Canadian WIL practitioners working at post-secondary institutions. If you are a staff or faculty member who supports students’ work-integrated learning, this training will support you to:

  • Think through how research literature and evidence-based wise practices can inform your daily work;
  • Reflect on your current process for assessing student learning, supporting meaning reflection, and engaging with employers and host organizations; and
  • Implement strategies to ensure your WIL programming is high-quality, ethical, inclusive, and accessible.

By the end of the three modules, you’ll know how to improve your practice and deliver quality WIL to your students. Throughout the training, you’ll encounter:

  • Written content and videos;
  • The voices and perspectives of students and recent grads who have participated in WIL;
  • Case studies from WIL practitioners in a range of types of WIL, academic disciplines, and institutional and regional contexts;
  • Research excerpts from peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and reports;
  • Resource spotlights, featuring templates, worksheets, and toolkits; and,
  • Annotated bibliographies, highlighting additional reading you may choose to seek out. -Learners receive a certificate of completion as they successfully complete each module. Upon completion of all three modules, learners will earn a certificate of completion in CEWIL’s WIL training modules and are eligible to apply for CEWIL Canada certified WIL Practitioner designation.

Costs:

Member price: $400 per module
Non-member price: $550 per module

*Prices are subject to change without notice

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When will modules 2 and 3 be available?

  • Modules 2 and 3 are now open for registration.

Why are there two steps?

  • In most professional fields, certifications and/or designations are generally reserved for those actively practicing in the field, as well as those possessing professional association membership. CEWIL Canada would like to offer CEWIL WIL Practitioner Certification to our membership, while also offering the training to a broad audience. The modules contain information that is valuable to many that work in the WIL ecosystem, that may not be interested in WIL practitioner certification, but for whom the information would have immense value.

Can I complete just one module, or do I have to do all three?

  • Learners are not required to complete all three modules. Module 1 on Quality WIL is a pre-requisite for completing the other modules. However, learners do not need to take module 2 (Student engagement) in order to complete module 3 (employer/host organization engagement) or vice-versa.

Is there a time limit on when I have to complete a module once I have registered?

  • Modules are completely asynchronous, however they must be completed within three months of enrolling in the module.

Do I have to complete a specific module first?

  • Yes, the first module on Quality WIL must be completed prior to enrolling in any of the other modules.

Can I register for Module # 2 or #3 if I am currently enrolled but haven't completed Module #1?

  • Yes, you can register in subsequent modules as long as you are currently enrolled or have completed Module #1.

How do I pay for each module?

  • For the first cohort of learners, if you are chosen to start January 31 you will be sent a unique link to register for the course and pay through the CEWIL website. After the first cohort, registration and payment will be made through the CEWIL website.

How do these modules differ from the Global WIL Modules?

  • Both programs are rich in quality and learning but contain unique content and differing delivery modes. The Global WIL modules are offered in a cohort model, bringing practitioners together as a community of practice to view WIL from a global perspective. The CEWIL modules have a Canadian focus, are completed asynchronously and include practical application in addition to theory and research. They are complementary rather than competitive.

Will the modules be offered in French?

  • We are currently looking at various modes of delivery for these modules to best suit the needs of French-speaking WIL practitioners.

How long after completing the modules do I have before I can apply for certification?

  • There is no waiting period to apply for certification once you complete the modules.

TESTIMONIALS

"As a "seasoned" WIL practitioner I have found the Foundation of WIL course refreshing and engaging. Although I have been involved in Co-op for more than 10 years, this course has given me the opportunity to challenge my own beliefs and biases. It provides me with a framework to challenge how I do WIL. This course is a must have for anyone working on the space no matter their years of experience." - Tony Slade, College of North Atlantic

"I am currently enjoying the CEWIL module 1: Foundation of WIL. The how, what and why of WIL is something that I am passionate about and this self-placed module addresses it with thoughtfully curated resources. A big thank you to Jennie, Letitia and the CEWIL team for their work put into CEWIL module 1." - Mohna Baichoo, Capilano University

“If you’re looking for a quality dive into the basics of WIL program development, this course is for you! The content is crisp and deep, which keeps the module interesting. The material is practically positioned for practitioners to truly understand the building blocks of WIL programming and enrich the quality and innovation of their WIL programs! The discussion forums serve a greater purpose --- the reassurance that the challenges in my business context are shared by others, and being part of a CoP of peer practitioners who are generous with sharing their experience and expertise. Go for it – you will thank yourself you did!” - Shabnam (Shay) Surjitsingh Ivković, University of Waterloo
